UPDATE: Man stabbed in Mary Street altercation arrested

Christopher D. Hansen and Mark Barnett

A man who was found with stab wounds to his chest has been arrested, according to police.

In a press release, Johnson City police said Mark Barnett, 28, 1734 Mary St., was arrested Tuesday after he was discharged from Johnson City Medical Center.

Police said Barnett received his wounds when he and another man, Christopher Donald Hansen, 56, assaulted Calvin Ball Jr. outside his home on Lyle Street. Barnett was beating Ball with a handgun, police said, when Ball drew his pocketknife and stabbed Barnett in the chest. Police said Hansen retrieved the gun and ran into Barnett's Mary Street residence, where he was later found by police.

Barnett was taken to JCMC with what police described as "non-life-threatening" injuries. Upon his discharge Tuesday afternoon, he was arrested on charges of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm while intoxicated, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was taken to the Washington County Detention Center, and will appear in Sessions Court Wednesday afternoon to face his charges.

Hansen had previously been arrested Monday on charges of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm while intoxicated, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was arraigned in Sessions Court on Tuesday afternoon, where his bond was set to $50,000. He will appear again on May 28.

Ball has not been charged in the incident.

REPORTED EARLIER:

A fight, pistol whipping and stabbing resulted in one man assaulted, another stabbed and a third in jail after an altercation about the first man’s dogs.

It happened around 7:30 p.m. Monday when Calvin Ball Jr., of Lyle Street, got home and saw two men near his dog pen.

Johnson City Police Sgt. Don Shepard said Ball told the men — identified as Christopher Donald Hansen and Mark Barnett, both of 1734 Mary Street — to leave.

In the end, Hansen was arrested on charges of aggravated assault, possession of a handgun while intoxicated and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. Barnett was stabbed in the incident and transported to the Johnson City Medical Center for treatment.

Ball was apparently upset over his dogs being poisoned on a previous occasion and didn’t want anyone near the animals. That started an argument among the men and a fight when Barnett allegedly assaulted Ball. As the two men were fighting, Hansen handed Barnett a pistol. Barnett hit Ball in the face with it and it fell to the ground.

“They’re still fighting. Barnett grabs the pistol and hits Ball in the back with it several times,” Shepard said.

When Ball saw Barnett had the gun, he pulled out a pocketknife, purportedly in self defense, and stabbed Barnett in the chest. Barnett dropped the gun, Hansen grabbed it and ran back to his house while Barnett lay on the ground bleeding.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found Barnett still lying on the ground bleeding and Hansen inside the residence with the handgun lying in plain view.

Police said Hansen is a convicted felon, which stems from a 2013 domestic assault conviction, and was intoxicated at the time of the incident Monday.

The incident was still under investigation and more charges were pending.

Hansen was arraigned on his charges Tuesday afternoon and a judge set his bond at $50,000. His next court date is May 28 at 9 a.m.
