Greeneville blanks Unicoi in 1-AA championship

ERWIN — Folks, Greeneville simply came to play.

The Lady Greene Devils blasted four home runs, and rode the talented arm of Jordan Fortel for a 9-0 whipping of Unicoi County in the Region 1-AA softball championship game Wednesday at Lady Devils Diamond.

Greeneville improved to 29-5 and earned a home game in Friday's sectional contest against Alcoa. For Unicoi County (38-10), a road trip to play CAK awaits. A trip to Murfreesboro for the Spring Fling is at stake.

For the Lady Blue Devils, it was an unexpected turn of events. Unicoi County had defeated Greeneville 1-0 in nine innings just a couple of weeks ago in the Tiny Day Classic.

“We made some adjustments at the plate from the last time we saw Tiffany (Laughren),” said Greeneville head coach Bob Fortel. “She's a great player, and today is not an indication of the type of player she is. But we can hit.”

On the other side in the circle, Fortel was spinning a two-hitter. Unicoi only got one runner to second base during the game, and Fortel had five strikeouts while inducing 14 outs in the air.

“I felt loose, and I was hitting my spots,” said Fortel. “And the defense especially helped. They were making plays.”

Greeneville shortstop Lorena Leon stood out on defense with several nice plays.

Meanwhile, Unicoi wasn't so sharp defensively, especially early. After Fortel's leadoff single, Unicoi made two errors and the Lady Greene Devils eventually plated two runs in the top of the first inning. Regan Lowery had a sacrifice fly in the frame.

Fortel came up again in the top of the third inning, and drove a ball way over the left-center field fence to make it 3-0. After a bloop double from Selena Leon, Lorena Leon drove a pitch just over the right field fence to make it 5-0.

In the sixth inning, Cayla Woods hit a solo homer. Then in the seventh, Naddalyn Sauceman crushed a three-run homer.

Unicoi County head coach Grady Lingerfelt said Greeneville just took the game with hitting.

“They just killed it, all up and down the lineup,” said Lingerfelt. “There's nothing to say. It's about like the way we hit against Grainger.

“That just happens in this game. With girls sometimes you don't know who will show up.”

Fortel and Sauceman each had two hits for the Lady Greene Devils, who have won twice in Erwin with the region title on the line.
