Police: Man arrested after grandmother makes assault claim

Wayne A. Heimiller

A city man was arrested after police said he physically assaulted his 74-year-old grandmother during an argument.

On Saturday, Johnson City police arrested Wayne A. Heimiller, 19, 305 Wilson Ave., after his grandmother told them he had pushed her down and slapped her in the face.

In the arrest report, police said they were dispatched to the area in reference to a 911 call reporting a domestic assault. When officers arrived at the house, police said, they were flagged down by the grandmother and her son, who were sitting in a truck parked outside the house. Police said the grandmother then told them about the assault, and that her grandson, Heimiller, would not let her back in the house.

After they went inside the house, police said, Heimiller told them he and his girlfriend had been arguing and his brother, who was also in the house, stepped between them to intervene. Police said Heimiller told them he then shoved his brother, who bumped into his grandmother and knocked her to the floor. According to police, Heimiller’s brother said he had bumped into his grandmother accidentally after he was pushed. Apart from that incident, police said, Heimiller denied assaulting his grandmother.

When officers returned to speak with the grandmother, police said, she told them she tried to intervene during the argument between Heimiller and his girlfriend. Police said she told them it was then that Heimiller began cursing at her, shoved her to the floor and slapped her in the face. Police said officers could see redness on the side of the grandmother’s face.

Because of that, Heimiller was arrested and charged with simple assault domestic. He was taken to the Washington County Detention Center, where he was held until he bonded out on Sunday. He was arraigned in Sessions Court on Monday, and will appear in court again on the afternoon of June 12.
