Carter County deputy placed on unpaid leave as allegations of 'inappropriate conduct' are investigated

ELIZABETHTON — A deputy with the Carter County Sheriff's Department has been placed on unpaid administrative leave while investigators check out an allegation of inappropriate conduct.

Sheriff Chris Mathes said Sgt. Shane Watson was suspended on Monday after the department received the complaint from a witness. Mathes said the matter is being held by the department's internal affairs and is headed by Capt. Rocky Croy.

Mathes said the investigation should be completed in a few days and a decision will be made after the results have been reported.

The alleged inappropriate activity did not appear to be of a criminal nature.
