UPDATE: Investigators say Gray drove bus between 20, 30 mph over limit

Brenda K. Gray

More than a year and a half after a September 2012 school bus crash injured 39 David Crockett High School students, the driver has a trial date.

Judge Robert Cupp scheduled Brenda K. Gray’s trial on 39 counts of reckless aggravated assault for July 2-3 in Washington County Criminal Court.

The wreck happened around 3 p.m. Sept. 20, 2012, on Mount Wesley Road just a short time after Gray left David Crockett High School. Investigators believe she was driving between 52 and 60 mph — nearly twice the 30 mph speed limit — when she went off the left side, then overcorrected and went off the right side of the road. The bus then turned over and rolled once as it slid to a stop.

Tennessee Highway Patrol traffic investigators determined Gray was speeding and at fault for the crash.

The THP traffic crash report is one of the issues that has held up the case, as well as some problems Gray has had with her previous attorney, who died while the case was pending.

She now has two pro bono attorneys, Cliff Corker and Jim Bowman, who agreed to take the case without pay because Gray cashed in her retirement to pay that first attorney.

Corker and Bowman wanted to get their own crash-reconstruction expert to review the evidence, and that has been difficult because there’s no money to pay that person.

The case could still get worked out with some type of agreement before the trial date, but Cupp wanted it on a trial track due to its age.

Gray remains free on bond while the case is pending.
