Police: Video offers possible clues in downtown Johnson City crosswalk assault

Crosswalk on State of Franklin Road

Johnson City police investigators now have a video that shows “people of interest” in a downtown assault earlier this year that left a city man with a brain injury.

It happened Feb. 9 at the crosswalk on State of Franklin Road between two public parking lots. Matthew Brookshire, 21, of Bristol, Tenn., was found unconscious and bleeding on the sidewalk.

While police have found no eye witnesses, a number of people walked up and found Brookshire on the ground. One witness told the Press she saw several black males running away from that area, yelling and talking about having beaten someone up.

“We’ve got people of interest who tried to get into Capone’s and were turned down,” said Investigator Matt Keller. “We have a witness indicating they may be involved.”

Investigators have been unable to talk to Brookshire because he’s still in a rehabilitation hospital in Georgia.

“We won’t be able to talk to him until he gets back and that will probably be a couple of weeks,” Keller said.

When police investigators and EMS responded to the scene at 150 W. State of Franklin Road around 3 a.m., they found Brookshire on the ground at the crosswalk between the Downtown Square parking lot and the Cherry Street parking lot.
