Sullivan County church treasurer accused of embezzling more than $10,000

Dwight Mumpower

FALL BRANCH — A Gray man is facing a felony theft charge for allegedly stealing more than $10,000 from the Sullivan County church where he served as treasurer.

Dwight E. Mumpower, 48, North Creek Drive, Gray, was arrested Friday evening by the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office on a single count of theft over $10,000.

Sullivan County authorities began investigating the thefts after being contacted March 20 by leaders of Mill Creek Baptist Church in Fall Branch, according to police reports.

Upon arrival at the scene, investigators were reportedly given documents showing that the amounts taken during the church offerings did not match the amount of money in the church's bank account.

An SCSO spokeswoman said an investigation revealed that Mumpower had written himself several checks from the church's bank account. Mumpower also allegedly had a debit card that was tied to the church account issued in his name.
