Police say woman arrested after trying to steal over $500 in jewelry

A Johnson City woman was arrested after police said she tried to steal more than $500 worth of jewelry from a store.

On Tuesday, Johnson City police officers arrested Maria Romero, 45, 115 Top Side Cir, Apt. 26, after they said she tried to steal the jewelry from JC Penney’s, locaed inside the Mall at Johnson City.

Police said members of the store’s loss prevention department watched Romero put several pieces of jewelry in her coat and then left the store without paying for them. The jewelry, which had a combined value of $515, was recovered.

Romero was charged with shoplifting - theft over $500, and taken to the Washington County Detention Center, where she was being held in lieu of a $5,000 bond. She will appear in Sessions Court Wednesday afternoon to face her charges.
