ERWIN — Following the Thursday arrest of a Flag Pond woman who police say witnessed but failed to intervene in a recorded fight between her daughter and another female juvenile, officials with the Unicoi County Sheriff's Department said other arrests were anticipated in the case.
On Friday, the expectations of sheriff's department officials came to fruition with the arrest of a North Carolina man who was also allegedly present at the fight.
David Grant Shelton, 23, 6194 Highway 212, Marshall, N.C., was arrested and charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and criminal trespassing. According to Unicoi County Sheriff Mike Hensley, Shelton was present at a recent fight between 13-year-old girls, a video of which was uploaded to the Facebook account of one of the girls on Tuesday.
Through investigation, police officials identified Shelton as one of the adults present.
"He was there egging it on," Hensley said Friday. "The video speaks for itself."
David Shelton's Friday arrest followed the Thursday arrest of Amanda Rana Shelton, who was also charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and criminal trespassing.
According to sheriff's department officials, Amanda Shelton was present at the fight between her daughter and another girl that occurred recently at the old Flag Pond School. Hensley said after one of the girls placed a video of the fight on her social media account, the sheriff's department began receiving calls from concerned citizens.
UCSD Chief Investigator Ronnie Adkins said Thursday that the video, which runs just a little more than 3 minutes, depicts a "violent physical confrontation" between the juveniles. He said the girls can be seen kicking and punching each other as several onlookers watch. Adkins also said it appears the girls want to stop the fight at one point, but they are encouraged to continue by those witnessing it.
Adkins said investigators identified Amanda Shelton as one of the adults present and that she provided direction to her daughter on what to do during the fight, doing nothing to stop it.
"As long as I've been an officer, I've seen girls fight, two teenagers, you know, that happens all the time," Hensley said Friday, "but when you've got parents egging a fight on without anybody saying 'Hey, you stop this,' and then they get to the point where they're going to quit and they keep egging it on, that's very disturbing. That's very disturbing to me, and we're not going to tolerate it."
Hensley said investigators learned David Shelton was also at the Flag Pond School when the fight occurred. He said officials also learned that he is somehow related to Amanda Shelton and had been living with her family.
Amanda Shelton appeared in Unicoi County General Sessions Court on Friday morning, where a $2,000 corporate bond was set. She had bonded out of jail by Friday afternoon and is scheduled to be back in court on April 17. David Shelton remained in the Unicoi County Jail as of Friday afternoon and is currently scheduled to appear in Sessions Court on Monday.
Hensley said the Department of Children's Services has been contacted and will be conduct followups. He also said other arrests could be made in the incident.
"This is not something we're going to take lightly," Hensley said. "We want to put the brakes on this before it gets started."comments powered by Disqus
