East Tennessee State’s basketball past and future are coming together with its present.
The Bucs will play host to Chattanooga in the Collegeinsider.com Tournament on Tuesday night, bringing together two former rivals in the Southern Conference.
They’ll be rivals again next season when ETSU rejoins the SoCon.
“This is obviously a great matchup for our fans, our students and teams,” ETSU coach Murry Bartow said. “The ETSU and Chattanooga series has always been something special, with great players on both sides competing in memorable games. What makes this even better is that it gives us an early glimpse of life back in the Southern Conference. In the future, this matchup is something we will get to enjoy multiple times each year.”
Chattanooga, seeded second, lost in the SoCon quarterfinals to Georgia Southern. The Mocs will bring an 18-14 record to Johnson City. Z. Mason leads Chattanooga, averaging 1`8.3 points per game, ranking fourth in the SoCon.
ETSU comes into Tuesday night’s game 18-15. Rashawn Rembert’s 16.8 average is tied for the Atlantic Sun Conference lead with USC Upstate’s Torrey Craig.
The two teams have met 75 times, with Chattanooga holding a 43-32 edge in the series. The Mocs won the last meeting in 2009.
ETSU and Chattanooga combined to win the SoCon tournament 12 times in a 17-year period from 1981-97. They have combined to win 49 league titles and have met five times in the SoCon final, with ETSU winning three of them.
Gametime at the MSHA Athletics Center is 7 p.m.
Second-round games are set for Friday and Saturday. The 32-team tournament ends on April 3. The semifinals and championship game are scheduled to be televised by the CBS Sports Network.comments powered by Disqus
