Police say witnesses saw man vandalizing vehicle

A man was arrested after Johnson City Police Department officers said witnesses saw him throw a brick at a vehicle that had been vandalized.

On Tuesday morning, police arrested Claude P. Smith, 40, 1109 Lowell St., Johnson City, after responding to a call of vandalism near the area of 1218 W. Main St.

When they arrived around 2:15 a.m., police said, they saw that a nearby vehicle’s windshield had been smashed and that all four of its tires were slashed. Police said that witnesses and the vehicle’s owner told them they saw Smith hurl a brick at the vehicle before speeding away in a Dodge Dakota.

Police found the Dakota, and Smith, inside the Roadrunner convenience center at 607 Twin Oaks Drive. He was arrested and charged with vandalism over $500.

Smith was taken to the Washington County Detention Center, where he was being held on a $10,000 bond. He was arraigned Tuesday afternoon in Sessions Court.
