Five people were shot during a domestic shooting in Southwest Virginia on Tuesday, including a former professor and a former administrative assistant at Emory & Henry College. Four are dead with one person in the hospital listed in fair condition.
Two of the victims, Terry and Nancy Griffin, were formerly employed by nearby Emory & Henry. The school's President, Jake Schrum, released a statement Tuesday afternoon expressing grief for the losses.
behalf of Emory & Henry College I wish to express my profound
condolences to the family and friends of Nancy Griffin, a former
employee of Emory & Henry College, and other members of her family
who died Tuesday morning," the release said. "We ask for prayers for Nancy’s family,
including her husband, Dr. Terry Griffin, a retired E&H professor,
who is recovering from injuries sustained in the incident. Both Nancy
and Terry, who served this institution with distinction and dedication
for many years, occupy an important place in the
heart of the Emory & Henry community, and this tragedy leaves us
with an extreme sense of sadness and loss.”
Officers with the Washington County, Va., Sheriff's Office received a call around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday to a shooting in progress at 33325 Graceland Lane, Glade Spring. The person who called was believed to be Griffin Palmer, a 17-year-old Patrick Henry High School student.
Griffin told officers that two people had been shot at the residence, and then the phone was disconnected.
