An established Johnson City Tex-Mex chain announced the opening of a second franchise Friday, hoping to cash in on the college and medical employee populations.
Barberitos will open in the Earth Fare-anchored University Plaza on Feb. 28, between East Tennessee State University and the Johnson City Medical Center.
“Campus Barbs,” as franchise owner Andy Osbolt has named his newest venture, will take up residence in the space formerly occupied by Tacos El Pariente.
When Osbolt opened the Barberitos at 3135 Peoples St. nine years ago, it was the first location of the Athens, Ga.-based chain in Tennessee.
Since then, the eatery has expanded to Kingsport and Knoxville.
Last year, Barberitos saw sales grow by more than a quarter, ushering in a new wave of locations across the Southeast.
Osbolt is joined in the franchise venture by Brian Trammel, general manager of Johnson City’s other location since its opening.
Matt Elmore, an employee for more than four years, will be general manager of Campus Barbs.
Mitch Cox Realtor President John Speropulos brokered the lease in the vacated space in University Plaza, owned by Mitch Cox Companies.comments powered by Disqus
