Meth lab explodes in car in Hampton Dollar General parking lot

HAMPTON — The Carter County Sheriff's Department and the Hampton/Valley Forge Volunteer Fire Department responded to a suspected methamphetamine lab fire at 11 p.m. Thursday. Sheriff Chris Mathes said those operating the lab could have been burned in an explosion during a "shake and bake" method of producing methamphetamine.

Mathes said the fire was a suspected methmphetamine dump site in the parking lot of the Dollar General Store at 124 Highway 321. Volunteer firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire. None of the firefighters or investigators was injured.

Mathes said evidence at the scene indicates that individuals were attempting to make methamphetamine by using the shake and bake method while driving around in a car. It appears there was an explosion, causing a fire. The individuals dumped the flaming methamphetamine material in the parking lot.

Mathes said the investigation is continuing. Anyone who may have seen some activity at the dump site is asked to call the sheriff's department hot line at 542-2350
