ELIZABETHTON — Two investigations are continuing into last week’s vandalism of Elizabethton City School System buses.

“We have our own investigation going into disciplinary matters,” Director of Schools Ed Alexander said Monday. He said the school system’s investigation is going on while the Elizabethton Police Department continues a criminal investigation.

Alexander said his administrators are also assisting the police in its investigation. One way of helping is by determining the amount of damage caused by the vandals, who slashed tires and poured sugar into the diesel fuel tanks of the buses.

“We know it costs between $4,000 and $5,000 to replace the tires,” Alexander said. There are other costs, including the fuel that was ruined by the sugar and the overtime hours of people who helped make repairs. When the total amount is determined, Alexander said it will be requested as restitution.

“We are taking this very seriously,” Alexander said of the dual investigations.

Elizabethton's entire fleet was halted by the vandalism Feb. 3, forcing administrators to turn to neighboring school systems for assistance with transportation.
