Johnson City police officer injured in two-vehicle wreck

Dave Boyd/Johnson City Press The damaged unmarked police car came to rest near the intersection of North Roan Street and Watauga Avenue.

A Johnson City police officer received non-life-threatening injuries in a vehicle crash late Friday, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

The wreck occurred around 9:30 p.m. when the officer, who was traveling on Watauga Avenue, was responding to a call with his lights and siren operating. As he approached North Roan Street, a vehicle pulled from a convenience store parking lot into his path. Early reports indicate the female driver heard the sirens but did not see the officer’s cruiser as it approached.

The officer was transported to Johnson City Medical Center with injuries that included a possible broken leg, according to a THP spokesman.

The type of call the officer was responding to was unknown late Friday night. The official crash investigation will be handled by the THP.
