Police release surveillance images from Elizabethton purse theft

ELIZABETHTON — Police have released video surveillance images of two people suspected of taking a purse containing $1,800 in cash from Walmart on New Year's Eve.

A woman reported that her purse containing cash, credit cards and other items was stolen when she walked away from it. Brenda Merritt, West Palmetto, Fla., told police the purse contained $1,800 in cash, credit cards, gift certificates, a pair of eyeglasses, insulin, a wallet, a checkbook and Florida driver's license.

Walmart's security cameras revealed that Merritt had pushed her shopping cart next to the Red Box movie vending machine at the front entrance and walked out the door, leaving the purse. A woman in a pink sweatshirt is shown taking the purse.

Police said the woman in the sweatshirt and a man arrived and left together in a blue vehicle.

Police asked anyone with information regarding the theft or the identities of the people in the surveillance images to call Investigator Joe Harrah at 547-6415 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., the Elizabethton Police Department at 542-4141 or Crime-Stoppers at 542-7574.
