UPDATE: Wreck that closed eastbound lanes of I-26 claims a life

A nearly head-on crash killed a motorist Monday afternoon on Interstate 26, according to a news release from Kingsport Police Department Public Information Officer Thomas M. Patton.

According to the release, the KPD responded to the crash at mile marker 9 at about 1:30 p.m.

An investigation revealed a westbound tractor-trailer had a blowout on its front left tire, causing the driver to lose control.

The tractor-trailer struck a guardrail, crossed the median, broke through the cable barrier and entered the eastbound lanes.

County are closed following an accident involving a tractor-trailer and
vehicle.  

Traffic is at a standstill, and motorists needing to travel toward Johnson City should take an alternative route.

Emergency crews are on the scene.
