Theft probe sidelines Hampton teacher, coach

Leon Tolley

ELIZABETHTON — A teacher at Hampton Elementary School has been placed on suspension while the Carter County Sheriff’s Department conducts an investigation into alleged criminal activity.

Director of Schools Kevin Ward said Leon Tolley was placed on suspension Tuesday night. Ward said he could not comment on the action at this time.

Sheriff Chris Mathes said the investigation is in its earliest stage. He said the investigation is over an allegation of theft.

Tolley also serves as the girls basketball coach at Hampton High School. The team is 7-4 going into tonight’s game at Chuckey-Doak. Longtime coach Bud Hazelwood has been selected to take over head coaching duties during Tolley’s absence.
