Man wanted in Maryland captured in Bristol, Va.

Joseph Aaron Hamilton

BRISTOL, Va. — Police in Bristol, Va., have captured the man that ran from the Virginia State Police late Monday night.

On Monday evening, the Virginia State Police stopped a man they found walking on Interstate 81 near Exit 3 and discovered he was wanted out of Maryland on an assault charge.

Joseph Aaron Hamilton, 37, allegedly fled from police officers, who were unable to find him again despite and extensive search that included the use of both a police canine and helicopters.

Shortly after 8 a.m. on Tuesday, officers from the Bristol Virginia Police Department learned the suspect was spotted near the intersection of Euclid  and Commonwealth avenues.

An officer spotted the suspect on Euclid Avenue and ordered him to stop.

The suspect ran again, but the officer was able to run him him down on foot.

No one was injured in the short foot pursuit.

Hamilton reportedly told authorities he knew he was wanted by police and had been wandering the country to avoid being caught.

Hamilton was charged with being a fugitive from justice and is being held without bail at the Bristol Virginia Sheriff's Office. He is scheduled to go in front of the judge on Wednesday.

The original charge that Hamilton was wanted for out of Maryland for was assault in the second degree.

The Virginia State Police have declined to press any charges against Hamilton for escaping the night before.
