Hot Topics: Does your child believe in Santa?

Attention parents who celebrate Christmas: Does your child believe, or still believe, in Santa?

Some colleagues and I were talking this morning about how our kids found out Santa was not real.

About two years ago, when he was nine, our son found out from an older child at school that Santa was not real. We expected this was the way our son would learn the truth. Elementary school students, surrounded by older children, often find out this way. We were glad he made it to age nine.

After talking to his friend, he came home and asked us if it was true.

We told the truth.

Everything immediately made sense to him, and he laughed when he realized his dad ate the cookies, drank the milk and nibbled on the carrots for Santa’s reindeer. He knows his dad hates carrots.

But even though our son knows Santa doesn’t exist, this year he wants to “pretend” and do the cookies and milk the night before and watch “A Christmas Carol” (this one is my favorite), which is our family tradition.

We are all looking forward to it.

I believe kids of all ages can enjoy the magic of the season whether they believe in Santa or not.
