Happenings: Sights & Sounds of the Season

The sights and sounds of the season are in full swing throughout the region. From band and orchestra concerts to holiday ballets and Christmas parades, the calendar is chock full of activities featuring some of the area’s most talented youth.

Here’s a list of where you can enjoy some of these Sights & Sounds of the Season:

Concerts

• The Central (Va.), Eastside and Union high school choirs and the U.Va.-Wise Concert Choir will present a combined “Tapestry of Carols” Holiday Choir Concert at 7:30 p.m., Dec. 5, in the U.Va.-Wise David J. Prior Convocation Center, located at 1 College Ave., in Wise. The concert is open to the the public and admission is free.

• The Dobyns-Bennett Orchestra Small Ensemble Dessert Concert will be held at 7 p.m., Dec. 5-6. See any orchestra member for details or call (423) 378-8400.

• Fiddlin’ Carson Peters will perform at 6 p.m., Dec. 5, at Emeritus at Remington House. Holiday treats and beverages will be served. Call (423) 278-6347 for details.

• Students in Action will host an acoustic concert by Wise Old River and The Rose Sisters at Northeast State’s Kingsport Center for Higher Education at 8 p.m., Dec. 7. The concert is free and open to the public. However, the group asks patrons to bring a toy for distribution to needy children during the Christmas season. The toys can be for children of any age. The Kingsport Center for Higher Education is located at 300 W. Market St. in Downtown Kingsport. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. Call (423) 354-5340.

• The John Sevier Middle School Sixth Grade Holiday Concert will be held at 7 p.m., Dec. 9, at the middle school.

• The Castlewood Elementary and High School band members will pesent a holiday concert at 7 p.m., Dec. 12, in the school auditorium. Admission is free. Please come support our music students as they perform a selection of holiday and non-holiday songs.

• Sullivan Central Concert Band will hold its Christmas concert at 7 p.m., Dec. 12, in the school’s Little Theater. The concert is open to the public. Admission is free.

• The Sullivan South Holiday Choir Concert will be held at 7 p.m., Dec. 12, in the school’s little theater.

• The Volunteer High School Concert Band will present its holiday concert at 7 p.m., Dec. 12, in the school’s Little Theater. 

• King University’s Music Department will present its annual Christmas concert at 8 p.m., Dec. 12, in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church of Bristol, Tenn. The concert is a benefit for the Bristol Emergency Food Pantry. Admission is open to the public and all who attend are asked to bring a donation of non-perishable food items. Monetary donations for the food pantry will also be accepted. 

• The Johnson City Symphony Orchestra will present music of the season, including selections from “The Nutcracker” with the City Youth Ballet, at 7:30 p.m., Dec. 14, at Seeger Chapel on the campus of Milligan College. Student tickets are $10. Call (423) 926-8742.

• The Dobyns-Bennett High School Music Department will present its annual holiday concert featuring the band, orchestra and chorus at 7 p.m., Dec. 16, at Eastman’s Toy F. Reid Employee Center.

• The Sullivan Central Ensemble Concert, featuring the percussion, woodwind and brass ensembles, will be held at 7 p.m., Dec. 16, in the school’s Little Theater. The concert is open to the public. Admission is free.

• The Sullivan South Concert Band will present its annual Christmas Concert at 7 p.m., Dec. 16, in the school’s theater. The concert is open to the public. Admission is free.

• The Church Hill and Surgoinsville middle school 7th and 8th grade bands will present a holiday concert at 7 p.m., Dec. 17, in the Volunteer High School Little Theater.

• The Robinson Middle School orchestra will present its holiday concert at 7 p.m., Dec. 17, in the school auditorium.

• The Volunteer High School Choir, Chorale, Women’s Chorale and Volunteer Voices will present a holiday concert at 7 p.m., Dec. 17, at First Baptist Church in Church Hill. The concert is free to the public.

• The Church Hill and Surgoinsville middle school 6th grade bands will present a holiday concert at 7 p.m., Dec. 19, in the Volunteer High School Little Theater.

• The John Sevier Middle School music department will host its 7th and 8th grade holiday concert at 7 p.m., Dec. 19, at Eastman’s Toy F. Reid Employee Center.

Parades

• The Blountville Ruritan Annual Christmas Parade will be held at 2 p.m., Dec. 14, in downtown Blountville. Parade starts on Keystone Drive. The Sullivan Central band will participate.

• The Bluff City Christmas Parade will be held at 5 p.m., Dec. 14, on Main Street in Bluff City. The Sullivan East band will participate.

The Nutcracker

• Kingsport Ballet will present “The Nutcracker” at 7 p.m., Dec. 6-7, and 2:30 p.m., Dec. 8, at the Wellmont Performing Arts Center at Northeast State. Call (423) 378-3967.

• Bristol Ballet Company will present “The Nutcracker,” at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Dec. 14, and 2 p.m., Dec. 15, at the Paramount Center for the Arts. Call (423) 274-8920 or purchase tickets online at etix.com.

Shows & Tours

• At Home With Santa will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Dec. 14, at the Historic Jonesborough Visitors Center and International Storytelling Center. Activities, shopping area for children, carriage rides, etc. For more information, call (423) 753-1010 or visit historicjonesborough.com.

• The Rogersville Heritage Association’s Christmas Under Many Roofs Tour of Homes 2013 will be held from 3 to 8 p.m., Dec. 14. The tour will feature performances by the Cherokee High School Choir at First Baptist Church, and the Cherokee Flute Choir at the Hale Springs Inn. Tickets are $20 the day of the event, and $15 when purchased in advance. Call (423) 272-1961.

Tree Lightings

• Kingsport will host its annual tree lighting celebration at 5 p.m., Dec. 7, at Church Circle in Downtown Kingsport. The D-B band will be in attendance. The Sullivan North Middle School chorus will perform inside Regions Bank at the Gingerbread House exhibit immediately following the tree lighting.

• The Historic Blountville Annual Christmas Tree Lighting will be held at 6 p.m., Dec. 12, in front of Sullivan County Courthouse, downtown Blountville.The Blountville Middle School choir will perform. Cookies and hot chocolate will be served.
