Christmas tree purchase gone wrong: Kingsport man critical after shotgun blast

KINGSPORT — A Kingsport man is in critical condition after accidentally shooting himself on Friday afternoon, when a loaded shotgun discharged as he retrieved a Christmas tree stand from his vehicle.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. at Ingles, 4317 Fort Henry Drive. Seasonal Christmas tree sales are currently operating in the parking lot.

Kingsport Police Department Public Information Officer Tom Patton says Michel H. Bledsoe, 59, had purchased a tree. He then went to his vehicle to retrieve a tree stand, according to Patton, and apparently shifted a loaded 12-gauge shotgun that was in the backseat.
