Man shot by Kingsport police during standoff sentenced to year in prison

Jeffrey Chase Caldwell

KINGSPORT — A Kingsport man shot during a two-hour standoff with
police this past summer pleaded guilty to simple assault on Monday and
was sentenced to a year in prison.

Jeffrey Chase Caldwell was
shot in the abdomen by Kingsport police officer Joe Valentine in June
following an early morning standoff on the roof of his girlfriend’s
house. Caldwell had outstanding warrants in Hawkins and Sullivan
counties and was attempting to evade arrest.

 Initially, Caldwell
was thought to have been armed with a knife and a handgun, but the
handgun ultimately turned out to be a roof shingle.

 In August, a
Sullivan County grand jury indicted Caldwell on simple assault (a
misdemeanor) for placing Valentine in reasonable fear of bodily injury.
The same grand jury found that Valentine did not use excessive force.
