96-year-old Johnson City man burned over 75 percent of body in mower fire

The Carter County Sheriff’s Department reported an elderly man suffered severe burns over most of his body in a lawn mower accident Thursday evening.

Deputy Paul Morell reported that Ray Garland, 96, 1934 Dave Buck Road, Johnson City, was riding on his mower behind his residence when dry leaves under the mower caught fire.

Morell said medical responders from the Carter County Rescue Squad told him Garland was disabled and could not get off the mower and away from the fire. A neighbor, Art Hoffman, heard Garland calling for help and ran to him.

Morell said Hoffman pulled Garland from the burning lawn mower and surrounding brush fire and dragged him to safety until the rescue squad and fire department arrived. Rescue squad personnel told Morell that Garland suffered third-degree burns over 75 percent of his body.
