The intersection of West Watauga Avenue and West Market Street has been the site of some high-profile automobile crashes, including a 2011 crash involving a police cruiser and most recently one that seriously injured East Tennessee State University's president.
Citing crash statistics, Johnson City police recently indicated that the intersection is not particularly dangerous relative to other locations in the city.
“As far as what the numbers are showing, it’s not,” JCPD Sgt. Jim Tallmadge told Senior Reporter Becky Campbell earlier this week. “Sight distance really isn’t the problem. That’s the perception ... but the real problem is people running the red light."
The Johnson City Press recently took a dash-mounted camera through the intersection, coming from various approaches in both lanes of each one-way street. Here are the results:
