As we’ve noted before, it’s become common to see cardboard, brush and garbage blown or jostled from the bed of a moving truck. The problem is more than just an eyesore. It also can be deadly when debris lands on a busy highway.
Always remember to cover your load before taking to the highway. It’s both dangerous and illegal to transport unsecured or uncovered loads. Unfortunately, scattered debris is a problem that has become epidemic across the nation.
States are now addressing this problem, which claims the lives of hundreds of Americans annually who are involved in accidents caused by objects strewn on the highway.
It also costs taxpayers in Tennessee more than $11 million a year to clean up litter along the roads. That’s why the state Department of Transportation asks that motorists report it when they see someone tossing trash out a car window or dumping their loads as they travel. Simply take down the license plate number and call the nearest law enforcement agency.
