Johnson City man accused of holding knife to woman's throat, ramming car into tree

Jerry E. Leary

A Johnson City man held a knife to a woman's throat and rammed his girlfriend's car into a tree Monday during an argument that started at a North Roan Street restaurant, police said in a report.

Jerry E. Leary, 28, 116 Spring City Drive, No. 23, was arrested after a series of events that began with an argument at Smokey Bones and ended in a parking lot at AT&T Mobility, 2612 N. Roan St.

Heather Geeter, 20, told police she had been hanging out with a friend at Smokey Bones when Leary arrived and started an argument. He demanded a ride home and she agreed, but on the way, he punched her rearview mirror, causing a crack in the windshield. Once they got home, he took her car key and hid the vehicle.

Geeter called a friend, Angela Kidd, Jonesborough, to pick up Geeter and her children, and when Kidd arrived, Leary argued with her. Kidd told police Leary held her to a wall with his forearm and held a knife to her throat, saying no one would take his kids from him.

He finally let the women and the children leave the mobile home. As they left, the women spotted Geeter's car in a parking lot just up the street, so Geeter called Leary and asked for her key back. He agreed and met her in the lot, but he got in the car, started it and jumped out. The car went up a curb and hit a small tree, receiving more than $500 in damage.

Police were called to the lot at AT&T Mobility and arrested Leary. He was charged with aggravated assault and felony vandalism. He was jailed in the Washington County Detention Center on $15,000 bond pending a Sessions Court appearance today.
