Police: Johnson City resident caught catalytic converter thief in act

Timothy Nickels

A Johnson City resident came to find a man trying to steal a catalytic converter from a parked car and later identified the thief in a photo lineup, resulting in an arrest Wednesday, police said.

Timothy Nickles, 40, 3211 Mayfield Drive, Lot 2, was charged with vandalism over $500 and theft over $500.

On Sept. 13 about 2 p.m., police were called to 315 Central St., where a homeowner reported coming home and catching a thief in the act. The victim later identified Nickles in a photo line-up as the man at his home the day of the incident.

Police found Nickles on Wednesday after he applied for residency at the Johnson City Housing Authority.

He was jailed in the Washington County Detention Center on $15,000 bond and arraigned Wednesday in Sessions Court.
