77-year-old volunteer charged with embezzling $60K from Blountville cemetery

BLOUNTVILLE — A 77-year-old Blountville woman has been arrested for allegedly stealing more than $60,000 from a local cemetery, with police saying she did so while serving as treasurer for their volunteer association.

Last week a Sullivan County grand jury returned a sealed indictment against Nina Bernice Sexton, address listed as 363 Shadowtown Road. She was arrested Monday by the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office and booked in the Blountville jail.

According to presentments in Sullivan County court, the embezzlements occurred from the New Gunnings Cemetery Association between October of 2005 and October of 2013.  Gunnings Cemetery is located off Highway 126 in Blountville, near Sullivan Central High School.
