Sheriff talks to suspect, ends gun standoff

Sheriff Mike Hensley

Unicoi County Sheriff Mike Hensley helped calm a man down well enough to take his gun and arrest him Sunday night in the Sam’s Creek area of the county, the sheriff’s department said.

Hensley said the department was called to 4561 Old Asheville Highway on Sunday evening in response to a domestic disturbance call involving a family disagreement.

He said Bryce McKee was upset about a meeting that was called in regard to the family’s recent loss of their mother. Financial matters were discussed, and Hensley said it might have been too soon for McKee to handle. McKee brought a gun over to the family’s house and threatened to kill his brother. He then took off across the street to another residence owned by family members.

When officers were unable to get McKee to cooperate in giving up the gun, Hensley said that he knew McKee well enough to go in and talk to him. He was able to let McKee know what was going on and that he would be placed under arrest for aggravated assault.

“I’m just glad nobody got hurt,” Hensley said of the situation. “They’re good people, but you know how it is when you have this family stuff.”

Hensley said McKee is scheduled to go in front of a Sessions Court judge later today.
