KINGSPORT — After staging a pair of five-set thrillers in the District 1-AAA volleyball tournament last week, the Region 1-AAA title game between Dobyns-Bennett and Science Hill was a highly anticipated possibility.
But once the Tribe and the Lady Hilltoppers swept past their District 2-AAA competition in the semifinals and made the rematch a reality, the Lady Indians managed to take all the drama out of the matchup with a masterful performance.
D-B scored 14 of the final 15 points in Game 1 on Tuesday and never gave Science Hill an inch en route to a 25-12, 25-19, 25-21 victory inside the Buck Van Huss Dome, securing a home sectional game on Thursday night.
The Tribe got to the title game with an equally impressive 25-3, 25-14, 25-9 win over Sevier County. The Lady Hilltoppers blazed their trail to the title game and locked up a sectional berth with a 26-24, 25-12, 25-16 win over Seymour.
Taylor Henry had 16 kills and eight blocks to lead D-B in the title game. Lexi Hartsock led the Tribe’s scrambling defensive effort with 24 digs, but she had plenty of help. Sasha Morrisette added 18 digs and Makenzee Frohlich came up with 12.
Keisha Gregory paced Science Hill with eight kills, eight digs and three blocks. Allie Foster and Caprisha Webster had seven kills each for the Lady Hilltoppers, who will hit the road Thursday night.
