A Kingsport man already facing one rape charge placed last week had another one added this week and will be in court for both offenses Thursday, according to court documents.

Thomas Coburn, 46, 1924 Bloomingdale Road, No. 2, was being held in the Washington County Detention Center on $50,000 bond for a charge of rape. He appeared in Sessions Court Tuesday but another rape charge was added Monday, according to court records.

The original rape charge was filed Friday by Johnson City police.

That charge stemmed from a woman being attacked near West Market Street and University Parkway around 4 a.m. Friday. She told police she was walking home and stopped to make a call when she was attacked from behind and sexually assaulted. She told police she got away from her attacker and ran into the street where a passing motorist gave her help.

Police saw a man running away and caught him. The victim identified him as her attacker, according to a Johnson City police news release.

According to court documents obtained by the Johnson City Press Tuesday afternoon, police had been called to another rape around 1:30 a.m. Friday. The victim in this incident said she was walking near Wilson Avenue and Belmont Street when she was grabbed by a man and forced down the road to near 503 W. Main St., where she was told that if she screamed, she would be killed.

The man then raped her and ran away, she told police.

The woman was taken to Johnson City Medical Center. She also described the man who attacked her.

This description fit the man arrested in the rape reported a few hours later on Friday morning.

The incidents happened less than 1/2 mile apart.

Coburn is scheduled to appear on both charges Thursday morning in Sessions Court. His bond remained $50,000.

Coburn is listed on the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Sexual Offender Registry.
