Eric Myers' Man of the House - I Don't Need My Wife

I Don't Need My Wife

I will never forget the time several years ago when someone I know very well described the fact that he, a man with grown kids and a long marriage, didn't need his wife.

"Look," he said, "she can't do anything for me that I can't do for myself.  I don't need my wife."

I was stunned.  I felt a profound sadness for him.  I felt a sadness for his wife.  I felt sadness for his kids because it's impossible for attitudes like that not to impact other peripheral relationships.  I didn't say anything to him at the time and I've often thought about the fact that I didn't.  If I could have that moment back I would say something.  I'd say it right to his face and I would say it without flinching.

I would say, "Well, world history, common experience, and God all say you're wrong."

We men think we can do it all.  We men think we have the corner on brains, on decision making, on good judgement.  We men think if we could just be allowed to do things our own way for our own reasons everything would roll along just fine.

Well men, we're wrong.  William Young, the author of The Shack, said it best when he said, "Most of the pain and the hurt done in the world has been caused by men.  Not all of it but most of it.  Most of the pain and hurt in personal relationships has been caused by men.  Not all of it but most of it."

Let's reason through some questions just for fun .  How many women do you see missing fingers?

When was the last time you heard the words, "Hey everybody watch this!" come from a woman?  Just the other night my wife and I watched some crazy TV show about people doing stupid stunts and every one - every one - was a guy.  It was the guys jumping off the roof and trying to sit on a giant rubber ball (two broken vertebra), it was a guy riding his bike down the handrail and into a concrete block wall (stitches and a concussion), a guy ramping off a 30 foot incline trying to jump a 150ft. gorge (broken leg).

Women don't normally do these types of things because they have that little thing in their brains that says, "No thanks, that's just stupid."

They just think differently about situations and people and problems.

If you believe the Biblical narrative of creation, women were God's idea.  I think that's important because if you were to interview Adam I'm sure he would've said, "I got this."

In essence God said, "No, you really don't.  You need some help."

In other words God said basically, "I have an idea you would never think of to provide you with a person I know you need.  She is going to complement you and you need that."

If they were honest, every man could attest to times when their wives handled a situation better, their disciplinary idea was a better choice, or their advice toward a problem made more sense.  It's a sad man who cannot see the obvious and appreciate the many beauties women bring to the world.

Yes, we really do need women and thank God for them.
