A Kingsport man was charged with attacking and raping a woman who was walking down a Johnson City street early this morning.

According to a Johnson City police news release, Thomas Coburn, 46, 1924 Bloomingdale Road, No. 2, was being held in the Washington County Detention Center on $50,000 bond for a charge of rape.

Officers were called to the intersection of West Market Street and University Parkway around 4 a.m., where they found the victim. She said she was walking home and stopped to make a call when she was attacked from behind and sexually assaulted. She told police she got away from her attacker and ran into the street where a passing motorist gave her help.

Police saw a man running away and caught him. The victim identified him as her attacker, according to the news release.

Coburn was scheduled to appear in Sessions Court Monday morning.
