MURFREESBORO — There is apparently a different animal roaming the fields in the mid-state area.
Science Hill traveled to Murfreesboro with a perfect record and a state ranking of No. 6. The Hilltoppers came home with a 64-38 loss Friday night against Siegel, which was ranked No. 8.
Science Hill fell to 3-1 while Siegel improved to 3-2.
Things started great for the Hilltoppers as Gad Nagba scooped up a fumble on the game’s first play and rumbled two yards for a touchdown.
However, Siegel gave a hint of things to come as Dakota Crane tossed an 85-yard touchdown pass to Dominique Gooch to tie the game.
After Malik McGue threw the first of his three touchdown passes, a three-yard toss to Isaac Story, Crane hit Weston Hayes with a 67-yard scoring strike.
Crane would eventually connect on 7 of 12 passes for 370 yards and five touchdowns.
Science Hill re-took the lead on Alex Rinella’s impressive 47-yard field goal to make it 17-14 midway through the second quarter.
However, Crane struck again. This time he hit Denzel Harding with an 80-yard touchdown strike to give the Stars the lead.
Science Hill bounced right back with McGue finding Story in the end zone from six yards out to make it 24-21.
But the Stars closed the first half with a 32-yard scoring pass from Crane to Harding.
In the third quarter, Crane hit Harding from 31 yards out after Science Hill sputtered on its first drive. A 2-point conversion run from Colton Gibson made it 36-24.
Siegel got it back, and Harding rumbled in from 22 yards to make it 43-24.
Then the back-breaking play came as Harding intercepted a McGue pass deep in the end zone, broke a tackle, and eventually raced 107 yards for a 50-24 lead.
The Stars outgained Science Hill 583-501.
McGue had a huge game for the Hilltoppers. He totaled 363 yards of offense, rushing 22 times for 153 yards. He also connected on 22 of 46 passes for 210 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions.
Chance Pierce added 107 yards on 17 carries, and also hauled in a 29-yard pass reception.
