Kingsport police sort through conflicting statements in fatal crash

This contributed photo from the Kingsport Police Department shows the two vehicles involved in a fiery wreck on Fort Henry Drive Saturday night.

KINGSPORT — Kingsport police have yet to identify a woman who crossed into oncoming traffic on Saturday at 104 mph — igniting a head-on collision that killed both her and another driver — and continue weeding through conflicting witness statements about the incident.

KPD Public Information Officer Tom Patton says confirmation of the woman's identity has yet to come from the medical examiner's office, and police want to be absolutely certain before they announce it to the public. He said that's the only factor in the delay.

At approximately 8:15 p.m. the crash occurred on Fort Henry Drive, near South Street. A fire ignited by the collision burned her Acura so badly that police can't identify its exact model.
