Three Science Hill High School students have been named National Merit semifinalists.

Sajant Anand, Alicia DeVos, and Rachel Spady were among about 16,000 students across the county honored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation in the 59th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

Semifinalists are selected based on their academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities and honors and awards received. A semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by their high school principal, write an essay and earn ACT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test. Spady and Anand had perfect scores of 36 on the ACT last spring.

“The students’ selection is a wonderful testament to their level of scholarship and achievement,” SHHS Principal Melanie Riden-Bacon said in a news release. “They serve as exceptional role models for students at Science Hill.”

Each semifinalist will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit $2,500 Scholarships.  About 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and more than half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title. Winners will be announced in April.  For more information, visit www.nationalmerit.org.
