Update: Lanes reopen on 19-E after wrong-way fatal crash in Hampton


HAMPTON — A man going the wrong way on a divided highway was killed in a head-on collision with a tractor trailer truck on Tuesday morning, the Tennessee Highway Patrol reported.



Trooper Greg Marlowe said Danny R. Hopper, 58, Mountain City, was killed in the 6:10 a.m. accident. Marlowe said Hopper was driving north in the southbound lane in a 2002 Pontiac when he crashed into a southbound Kenworth truck loaded with steel bars.



The truck was driven by Morgan Kees Soren, 32, Newland, N.C. Marlowe reported that Soren was not injured in the collision. There were no passengers in the two vehicles involved in the accident.



Marlowe reported evidence of drugs and alcohol for Hopper and requested tests be conducted on him.



The collision left the busy highway blocked before morning rush hour, but motorists were routed around the wreckage.

HAMPTON — A Tennessee Department of Safety spokeswoman confirmed this morning that a crash on U.S. Highway 19E in Carter County included a fatality.

The crash just after 6 a.m. involved a commercial vehicle and a passenger vehicle. The Tennessee Highway Patrol was investigating. Preliminary information indicated a car was traveling northbound in the southbound lane, striking a Kenworth tractor trailer. 

Next of kin notification had not been made.


The spokeswoman reported about 11:30 a.m. that southbound lanes had reopened.

The spokeswoman said details would be forthcoming once a report is available.
