For some, Labor Day is a symbol of the hard work that built our country. To others, it’s a sign of the end of summer.
But for many, it’s a chance to enjoy a day off, and tackle a project that may have eluded us over the dog days of summer.
Local home improvement stores were buzzing with plans for these types of holiday weekend plans.
Danny Peck and his sons, Connor and Zach, were at the Lowe’s on Marketplace Boulevard, pushing a cart filled with building materials for a project in Zach’s apartment in the Tree Streets. And once their chore is completed, they expect to spend their Labor Day on Watauga Lake.
They said they’ve already built shelves for the apartment and this time around were tackling a platform for Zach’s bed. Zach is a senior philosophy major at East Tennessee State University.
A Lowe’s manager said the store had been busy with preparations for Labor Day sales, which included a popular warm holiday activity — grilling.
Cindy and Dave Frazier, of Johnson City, were in the process of closing on a Greene County camp in higher elevations, and put their pets first on their list of priorities, deciding which fence to go with to make their new property pet-friendly.
“We’re getting fencing to keep the critters out, and keep the pets in,” Cindy Frazier said in the outdoor section.
Not everyone at the Home Depot on Peoples Street was jumping into a project just yet. The Coyer family of Kingsport wasn’t convinced that summer is over and weren’t tangling with the high temperatures, stocking up on supplies to stain their deck for when cooler weather comes along. They said all they needed was a few rain-free days and temperatures in the 70s.
The rain was the reason Kingsport’s David Lauzon was at the store. He had a quicker project, saying he put off covering his gutters since getting a new roof put on, but with the start of fall, he was taking on the project Saturday.
Tim Kirkland, of Johnson City, said he was going to take advantage of having an extra day off. He was purchasing a pressure washer from Benedict’s Ace Hardware to clean his vinyl siding.
