Fire destroys camper in Carter Co. as family escapes


BUTLER — A North Carolina family and their dog escaped from a fire that destroyed their camper over the weekend.

Carter County Sheriff's Office Deputy Ashley Kennedy said the fire was at a 1984 Palomino 5th-wheel recreational vehicle set up at Camp Site 8 at 110 Shoreline Drive.

Kennedy spoke with the owner of the camper, Gary Millsaps of Spruce Pine, N.C. Millsaps said he was awakened by the family dog around 1 a.m. on Saturday. He said he saw fire coming from around the refrigerator. Millsaps quickly woke his wife and got the children and the dog out of the camper.

Kennedy said the camper was engulfed in flames when when fire and law enforcement arrived at 1:15 a.m.
