Johnson City police are looking into the death of an infant at a Knob Creek Road apartment.
The death was reported at Johnson City Medical Center Monday afternoon, according to police.
Someone at Knob Creek Arms Apartments, 1901 Knob Creek Road, found the infant unresponsive and called 911.
Johnson City Police Lt. Steve Sherfey said 911 dispatched Washington County/Johnson City Emergency Medical Services to the apartment, and a crew found the 16-month-old child unresponsive. The infant, who was not identified, was pronounced dead at the hospital, and police went to JCMC to investigate just before 1 p.m. Monday.
Sherfey said the child's parents were not home when the child was found, and a caregiver acquainted with the parents had been watching the child.
He said investigators must determine what happened first before more information could be released. Investigators did not know whether a crime had occurred.
An autopsy was ordered at East Tennessee State University's Quillen College of Medicine, and Sherfey said investigators would have to await those results before determining the circumstances of the child's death.
"We don't really know at this point ... until we have those results," Sherfey said.
Sherfey said more information would be made available once investigators determine what happened.
