Rhys Pugh will play in his second Walker Cup next month.
The East Tennessee State junior was chosen to the Great Britain & Ireland team, announced Monday. The Walker Cup, a biennial amateur team competition between teams from Great Britain & Ireland and the United States, will be played sept. 7-8 at National Golf Links in Southampton, N.Y.
This will be the 19-year-old Pugh’s second Walker Cup appearance. He was undefeated as the youngest player on either side in 2011 when the GB&I team won the cup in Aberdeen, Scotland.
Pugh is the only player named to his 10-man team with previous Walker Cup experience.
Also on the GB&I team is Matt Fitzpatrick, who won the U.S. Amateur last week. He was also the low amateur in the British Open at Muirfield.
Pugh, who won the European Amateur last year and the Welsh Stroke Play this year, also played in the British Open, missing the cut.
Another Atlantic Sun Conference player, North Florida’s Kevin Phelan, was chosen to the GB&I team.
ETSU doesn’t begin its fall schedule until the following weekend at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate in Chapel Hill, N.C., so Pugh won’t miss any time with his team.
