Inmate solicits murder of jailed gang member

KNOXVILLE –– A former inmate at Knox County Detention Center has been indicted for soliciting murder of a fellow incarcerated gang member following a August 13 Knox County grand jury decision, according to a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation news release.

According to the release, Nikos Burgins, 33, who is currently incarcerated in South Central Correctional Center, allegedly sent a letter on May 29, 2012 to a fellow gang member in Morgan County Correctional Facility.

In the letter, Burgins reportedly told him to inform other fellow gang members in prison to kill an inmate, who had testified against him during a Knox County rape and assault case.

He allegedly said in the letter to kill the victim as soon as possible and by any means.

The case was brought forth by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation in June 2012 after the 6th Judicial District Attorney General’s Office requested TBI to investigate.

According to the release, the Knox County Sheriff’s Office put a detainer on Burgins with the Tennessee Department of Correction.
