Call results in drunken driving charge

A Johnson City woman was charged Saturday after an unknown caller reported a possible drunken driver in downtown Johnson City, according to a Johnson City police report.

According to the report, the caller said a green Pontiac was weaving all over the road.

Two officers working the Umoja Festival were able to stop the vehicle, where they made contact with Donna Cecile Shanley, 59.

Shanley reportedly told police that she had been driving from Tampa, Fla., to Johnson City and that she was tired.

When police questioned her about when she drove to Johnson City, she replied "two days ago" and allegedly kept changing her answers and seemed confused.

Shanley denied having medical problems or needing medical treatment and a prescription bottle of Valium was sitting on top of her purse in plain view.

When police asked her if she had taken any of the pills, she told them no.

According to the report, the pill bottle label indicated she had been prescribed 90 pills and only 38 pills were in the bottle. Shanley said she didn’t know what happened to the pills.

She also reportedly had eight oxycodone pills in another bottle. She agreed to sobriety tests.

The tests concluded that Shanley was too impaired to operate the vehicle and she was arrested and charged with driving under the influence.

Police said she agreed to a blood test and was taken to Johnson City Medical Center before being taken to the Washington County Detention Center.

Shanley was being held on $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Sessions Court on Thursday at 9 a.m.
