Bulls Gap Man charged with stealing car from Johnson City auto repair shop

Thomas James Purdy

A vehicle being checked for an oil leak at a local repair shop was stolen as mechanics worked on it in June and an arrest was made over the weekend, according to an arrest warrant filed in Washington County Sessions court.

Thomas James Purdy, 29, 111 Walkers Church Road, Bulls Gap, was charged with theft over $1,000 after the car was found in Greene County.

The theft happened June 3 at Ponders Auto Repair, 915 W. Market St. The car was unlocked and running as mechanics tried to find an oil leak. Purdy is accused of getting into the car and driving away.

According to the warrant, Greene County sheriff’s deputies responded to a call about a suspicious person on East Andrew Johnson Highway. When officers arrived, Purdy told them his car had broken down.

The vehicle was towed by a local wrecker service and Purdy was given a ride to Opportunity House in Greeneville.

Purdy was arrested on the charge Saturday. The warrant does not indicate where Purdy was found. He was held on $10,000 bond and scheduled for arraignment Monday.
