HAMPTON — A thief broke into Captain Jack's Beverage Store on Friday.
Store employee Shanon Matheson told Deputy Isaac Rhea of the Carter County Sheriff's Department that the burglary was discovered when he opened the store up around 5:20 a.m. Matheson said he heard water running and found a hole in the ceiling and a broken water line. Matheson said he also found two cooler doors standing open and a wall vent in a back room had been pushed open.
Store owner M.L. Jack later talked with Rhea and said there were several areas around the building that showed attempts by the thief to break in. The thief had gotten on the roof and pried the vent cover off above the grill and pried open one of the ridge vents on the back of the store.
Rhea said it could not be determined which hole was the one in which the thief entered, but the perpetrator must have been small to squeeze through the holes.
Jack said the thief must have been trying to get into the store room. He said the thief was in the overhead when he stepped through the ceiling, breaking the water line.
The store video showed someone moving around the store with a flashlight and was still in the store when Matheson came to open up. Jack said it did not appear anything was missing.
