A homeowner died early Friday morning in a house fire in Boones Creek.
Johnson City police tentatively identified the victim as Robert Griffith, 64, who died in his home at 4200 Englewood Blvd., where fire was reported just before 1 a.m.
Police said firefighters discovered what is believed to be the body of the homeowner, Griffith, in the house's kitchen area. Preliminary findings indicated the fire was caused by a cooking incident.
"At this point it appears to be accidental, but we're going to have further investigation," said Mike Hill, assistant Johnson City fire marshal.

The investigation was continuing by the State Fire Marshall’s Office, Johnson City Fire Marshall’s office and the Johnson City Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
The house received extensive fire and smoke damage, according to a Johnson City Fire Department news release. The first crew arriving found heavy fire in the living room. The fire extended into the attic and kitchen.
"Due to the extreme fire . . . in the living room area and also the kitchen, they actually had to extinguish the fire before they could find the victim," Hill said.
The department responded with three engine companies, two ladder companies, a rehab unit, a command vehicle, and an air supply truck. Firefighters worked at the scene until 3:45 a.m.
Hill said a state Bomb and Arson Team also arrived with an ATF accelerant K-9 dog.
"When you have a possible crime scene — which it turned out this one isn't, this one appears to be just a terrible accident — just to make sure one of the things we like to do is to go ahead if we have the availability of one of the K-9s is just to run them through and have them check for accelerants," he said. "But none were found at this location."
