Expo to help get Kingsport students ready for school

KINGSPORT — The Fourth Annual Back to School Expo will be held today (Tuesday, July 30) from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Kingsport Town Center, formerly the Fort Henry Mall.

Sponsored by Kingsport City Schools, Kingsport Town Center and TimesNews.net, the event will include more than 70 vendors and exhibitors for parents and students of Kingsport City Schools and the community.

Free entertainment, demonstrations and activities for the kids can be found on the upper and lower levels of the mall.

The event will kick off at 3 p.m. with the Dobyns-Bennett High School Band/Drum Corps, D-B JROTC demonstrations and a vocal performance by Miss Kingsport in the Sears Court.  Various entertainment will continue at the Sears Court  until 6 p.m. In addition, a Back to School Fashion Show is set to start  at 4:30 p.m. near the Victoria’s Secret store.

Parents and guardians will be able to pick up all of the information needed to get their child or children started back to school. They will also have the opportunity to sign their children up for programs and activities  throughout Kingsport this fall.

Some stores within the mall will offer discounts during the event. The discount listing will be provided at the Kingsport Town Center table located in the Sears Court.

Vendors include KCS services and school programs; health, nutrition and safety related services; animal welfare/pet adoption; finance for college; tutoring, library/literacy programs; pre-school programs; wellness activities; arts, sports and recreation activities; children’s services; and various vendors providing interactive activities, demonstrations and prizes.

The web site also includes a list of back to school information for all city schools, including supply lists, schedules and bus routes.

 The first day of school for city students is Monday, Aug. 5. 

Freshman orientation at D-B is set for 9 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 2, for those with last names beginning with A-K and 11 a.m. that day for those with last names starting with L-Z. Palmer Center parent orientation is Aug. 5.

Before school starts, back to school kickoff events across the system are either Thursday, Aug. 1, or Friday, Aug. 2.

The Aug. 1 events are at Adams Elementary from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Washington Elementary from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.; Jefferson Elementary from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Robinson Middle 6 p.m. and Sevier Middle 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

 Events scheduled for  Aug. 2 are at Innovation Academy of Northeast Tennessee, a joint program of Kingsport and Sullivan County schools, at 10 a.m., Roosevelt Elementary from 1 p.m to 2 p.m.;  Kennedy Elementary from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.;  Jackson Elementary from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.;  Johnson Elementary from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Lincoln Elementary from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
