Sandusky newspapers win a total of 46 awards in 2013 TPA contest


Several Tennessee-based Sandusky Newspaper Group news organizations have been named winners and placed in the annual Tennessee Press Association newspaper contest.


For the 2013 contest, the Johnson City Press won first place in headline writing and second place in best business coverage.


Chief Copy Desk Editor Don Armstrong’s headline was submitted for the first-place award and former staff writer Madison Mathews’ story was submitted for the second-place award.


News Editor Sam Watson and Assistant News Editor Rex Barber’s management of johnsoncitypress.com was credited with a third-place win in the best website category. 


Fourth place was secured by the Press in the categories of best personal column by Jan Hearne, best news photograph by Tony Duncan, best education reporting by Barber as well as best news reporting.


The Press is a Group Four newspaper based on a combined weekly circulation of 50,001 to 200,000.


In Group Five, which is based on a combined weekly circulation of 200,001 and up, the Kingsport Times-News secured four total awards.


The Times-News won first place and fourth place in best sports photograph, second place in headline writing and fifth place in best business coverage.


The Herald & Tribune in Jonesborough, the Erwin Record and the Tomahawk in Mountain City are TPA Group One newspapers based on each paper’s combined weekly circulation of 5,000 or less.


With 18 total awards, the Herald & Tribune won the overall general excellence in its group.


First-place awards given to the Herald & Tribune were in the categories of best business coverage, community lifestyles, best single feature, public service, best spot news coverage and investigative reporting.


Second-place awards were won in categories of best sports writing, best personal humor column and best single editorial.


Third-place awards were earned in categories of best education reporting and best single editorial, while fourth-place awards were received in categories of best website and best personal column.


Fifth-place awards were achieved in categories of best sports photograph, local features, best feature photograph, best personal humor column and editorials.


With a total of 10 awards, the Record won first place in make-up and appearance. 


The Record won second place in categories of best business coverage, best special issue or section and editorials.


Third place awards were won in categories of best sports writing, best feature photograph, best spot news coverage and best news reporting. 


The Record also placed fourth in best sports coverage and fifth in headline writing.


The Tomahawk received two awards — fourth place in best feature photograph and second place in public service.


In Group Three, the Lebanon Democrat placed second in three categories — best sports writing, best personal column and best single editorial. The Democrat also won fourth place in editorials.
